First Fundraising Numbers For Council & Mayor

Richard Martinelli

Financial disclosure reports for candidates for mayor and city council were filed last week, giving us a first look at how candidates are doing — dialing for dollars, as this reporter likes to call it. While fundraising is more important in the citywide race for mayor, all candidates must raise enough funds to pay for their palm cards, mailings, TV ads and staff to get out there message to the 200,000 people in the city.

Here are the totals:

Mayor

Republican Richard Martinelli led all candidates in fund raising, with $142,100 raised through July 15. Martinelli’s campaign spent $71,224 in that same period, leaving just under $71,000 on hand. Martinelli received many large contributions of $1,000 or more, and spent $37,250 on staff and on consulting (Digiworks Media).

Democrat Chuck Lesnick was second in fund raising, with $98,370 raised, and with over $40,000 in expenses, leaving a balance of $54,000. Lesnick spent $15,500 on staff and consultants during the first seven months of the year.

Democrat Mike Spano was third with over $57,000 raised, and $9,182 in expenses, leaving $48,465 on hand. Spano received $3,400 in contributions from Yonkers Police Union Political Action Committees PAC’s.

Republican John Murtagh was fourth with $52,931 raised and more than $35,000 in expenses, leaving a $15,000 balance. Murtagh spent over $27,000 on consultants (NLO Strategies and others) and $12,000 for print and postage for an early mailer sent out to Republicans citywide.

Democrat Bob Flower raised $34,510, with most of the contributions coming from a loan from himself and his companies, with $17,825 in expenses, leaving $16,685 left in the bank.

As of press time, no reports were filed from Republican Carlo Calvi, Democrat Shirley Thompson or Evan Inlaw, who some speculate to be only a “place holder” on the Working Families Party line while it awaits the outcome of the Democratic primary.

City Council –Fifth District

Republican Mike Breen led all council candidates with $41,135 raised. His campaign spent $34,329, leaving him $6,805. Breen spent $13,000 in consultants (Digiworks Media).

Republican Stephen Cerrato raised $21,344 and spent $16,774 leaving $4,569. Cerrato received contributions from Yonkers Union PAC’s.

Republican Joe Crotty raised $16,158 and spent $4,150, leaving $12,000 on hand.

No figures available for Democratic 5thDistrict candidate Kathleen Thomas and Katherine Brezler.

Third District

Democrat Mike Rotanelli raised $15,738 and spent $3,232 leaving $12,506. Democrat Michael Sabatino raised $12,081, and spent $6,294, leaving $5,787. No figures have been released by democratic candidates Dennis Robertson or Michael Sweeney, nor from Republican candidate Jay Bryant.

First District

We could only find a disclosure report for democrat Larry Sykes, who raised $6,674 and spent $5,690, leaving $984 on hand.

  1. It’s funny how the Marintelli haters on this post ignore his republican opponent, John Murtagh, and his campaigns problems. No funds coming in and no support from conservatives and his buddy Castro-Blanco.

  2. from the Martinelli campaign —

MARTINELLI RAISES MORE $$ THAN OPPONENTS
He Has the Money, Message and Momentum Needed to Win!

Richard Martinelli, the Republican businessman and Conservative Party nominee for Mayor of Yonkers, far out fund-raised all four of his opponents in the quarter ended June 30th. Martinelli bested both opponents in the September 13th Republican Primary, raising $142,110 compared to liberal City Councilman John Murtagh, who struggled to raise a paltry $52,931. Martinelli’s other GOP Primary opponent Carlo Calvi failed to file any of the finance reports required under New York State law.

Martinelli also significantly surpassed both of his potential Democrat opponents; Assemblyman and professional politician Mike $pano, who raised $57,648 and City Council President Chuck Lesnick who raised $68,136.

Martinelli’s spokesman Rob Ryan said, “It’s becoming very obvious, in the race for Mayor of Yonkers, that Republican businessman Richard Martinelli is clearly the front-runner. He has the money, the message, and the momentum needed to become Yonkers next Mayor. Richard Martinelli out raised his closest Republican opponent by a more than 2½ – 1 margin and his closest Democrat opponent by a more than 2-1 margin.”

In addition, Martinelli proved his strength in within the GOP by collecting over 2,000 signatures on his Republican nominating petitions, besting both Calvi and Murtagh by hundreds of votes; proving his support among Republican grass roots voters and the strength of his campaign operation.

  3. Martinelli loaned his campaign 50K.

  4. Daddy’s money helps doesn’t it Richie Rich!!

    Comment by Bank 0f Dad | July 29, 2011

  5. The Martinelli campaign statement is so poorly written and obnoxious that no additional comment is warranted.

But I pose a question if he is so flush with cash, and such a “powerhouse,” why does Richie have to run what is possibly an illegal gambling operation by blanket mailing out a $1000 per ticket raffle for a Yankees box? It is so blatently stupid that it smacks of desperation.

I would also like to know how much of their money came from La Familia. I mean everyone knows those printing presses have been running some big Numbers for years.

  6. Rich gave his campaign a $50G loan and STILL raised more then the entire field. There is also nothing wrong with a self financed campaign. Just go ask Mike Bloomberg.

  7. Jay Bryant loaned his campaign 40Gs, Mr. Murphy

  8. Jay Bryant? You mean the Republican in Democrat clothing? That Jay Bryant?

  9. Time to move on to more compelling issues, don’t you think?

    Comment by A. Truman | August 2, 2011

  10. The Martinelli campaign is currently being investigated for holding an illegal raffle, a class A misdemeanor. What’s better is that he had the nerve to try and charge $1000 dollars a ticket. Hopefully the authorities actually go after him on this. I guess it’s easy to raise as much as Rich when you get “loans” from Daddy’s friends and commit crimes.

Can we get a story on this Murph?

  11. Last night at the National Night Out Murtagh, Lesnick and Spano made appearances at the events. Where was Richie? He never showed. Perhaps he was too busy printing raffle tickets? Or just plain lazy?

  12. Hey Mike, what’s the deal with Tony Sayegh? Caught the Newsmakers at Stars Bagel on Sunday.

  13. Anyone know who is on or off the ballot in Yonkers tonight? A lot of races being challenged. The GOP mayors race right?

Comment by not to change the subject | August 3, 2011

  14. No one is off the ballot. Still three candidates on the GOP side. Richie tried to bring a senseless lawsuit to get Carlo off the ballot and failed miserably. Pretty embarassing. He must be pretty nervous to have to go that low. The story about the lawsuit is on the Yonkers Tribune.

    Comment by Fruitless | August 4, 2011

  15. Thank you Fruitless. What about the Yonkers council races? Everybody still on. The legislative races? I love how we have no news in Yonkers – only these blogs which don’t update often enough.

  16. I looked over these reports and Mike Breen (the guy that fell asleep at teh budget meeting) is reported to have raised $41,000. What they dont tell you is that $18,000 came directly from him, so I guess he only raised $23,000. His misleading the people on such an nominal issue is sad and certainly not what we need in this City… These people like to use smoke and mirrors to hide the truth…Report the real facts…

  17. I can receive many “large contributions of $1,000″ through an illegal gambling raffle as well. Must be nice, well not really after the authorities take it to criminal court.

    Comment by Boof | August 11, 2011

  18. Interesting how Martinelli didn’t file his financials by the August deadline. Is it perhaps because daddy Angelo and his friends realized Richard stands no chance and stopped feeding his losing campaign money?

Can we get a story with the new financials Dan?

  19. Here’s your story. Murtagh’s support for gay marriage will guarantee that he has no chance in a republican primary. It’s a short, one issue campaign for Martinelli. It’s that simple.

  20. Great article in the guardian today entitled “Martinelli Must Withdraw”. Thank God someone finally had the balls to print it

  21. Looks like Murtagh is The Westchester Guardian’s candidate of choice. Does this mean what I think it means?

  22. Wondering why you havent wrote a story about rich raising 2,900 bucks last filling which was 2 weeks late btw, or the fact that Mike leads all in fundraising at this point.?

    Comment by HMMMMMMMMMMMM | August 26, 2011

  23. In response to HMMMMMMMMMM, Murph should do a follow-up story on Mike’s finances and see how much has come from the unions (Yonkers Fire, Police, CLSA, and Teamsters). Better yet, I’ll tell you: More than $30,000. Despicable that the very ones who went to Albany to protest the city council’s attempt to curb OT with a 20K cap and wage freeze to rein in pension padding were the first ones to pile on Mike’s wagon. Oh that’s right…he killed the bills in Albany that would have helped the city’s finances. Can you say “quid pro quo.” And how about Mike’s taxpayer-funded literature that went out in July and early August. Some $40K that he didn’t have to charge the campaign. Jeez…some say this guy should stay in Albany. Reality is, this guy should go to jail.

  24. Zehy Jereis medical bills are paid by the taxpayers through Assemblyman Mike Spano office. Could that be buying his silence? Longfellow Middle School is next door to where Jereis owns property. Did Mike Spano broker the deal for Ridge Hill through Zehy Jereis when he worked for Lynch? Nick Spano’s buddies Leibell and McGuire went down. When will Preet Bharara indict dumb and dumber?
