24 Candidates Step Forward To Run for Mayor & Council

With the petitioning process now over, the 24 Democratic and Republican candidates for Mayor and City Council must now wait and see if their signatures stand up to challenges from their competitors.

Here’s the latest:

Mayor: 1,000 Valid Signatures Required

Democrats Mike Spano and Chuck Lesnick both filed more than enough signatures to avoid a challenge. Spano got 3,900 signatures, besting every candidate inYonkers. Lesnick obtained a healthy 3,362.

Spano touted his volume of signatures, saying “Today’s announcement continues the campaign’s growing momentum and is another indicator that Democrats across Yonkers are united in providing a new direction at City Hall focused on educational opportunity and economic growth, as well as ending the years of running Yonkers by crisis and blame. This is more than a campaign for mayor — this is a movement for a new direction in our city. Together, we will moveYonkersforward.”

Lesnick said, “I think it’s significant to note that over two-thirds of democrats who signed petitions did not sign for the party’s choice [Mike Spano]. It’s a wide open race.”

Dr. Robert Flower, another democrat, handed in 3,800. Shirley Thompson left the race.

Spano was the Democratic City Committee’s choice for mayor, so the rank and file Democratic District and Ward members collected signatures on his behalf, boosting his total.

Three republicans filed petitions for mayor — Council Minority Leader John Murtagh, former Council President Richard Martinelli and former Councilman Carlo Calvi. Each collected more than enough signatures to thwart a challenge from any other.

Martinelli topped the field with 2,030 signatures. Murtagh, the Yonkers GOP-endorsed candidate, filed with 1,940 and Calvi with 1,830.

“I obtained many of the signatures personally and with the help of over 50 unpaid volunteers,” said Calvi. “It was a pleasure to meet the hundreds of people who signed. I thank them and concur in the reoccurring sentiment which they expressed; thatYonkersneeds to be fixed in many ways, such as taxes, education, waste in City Hall, crime and developer give-aways. I’m not sure of the same about my opponents who appear to have sat back, taken it easy (one of them is reputed to have gone on a nice vacation) while the work was done.”

Martinelli said, “This week, we filed over 2,000 signatures with the Westchester County Board of Elections. They are the signatures of rank and file Republicans who share my belief that, if Yonkers is to grow and flourish, we must cut spending and rein in government so as to lower the tax burden that is breaking that back of so many of our citizens.

“The status-quo doesn’t work anymore. In these tough economic times, we must work together to create an atmosphere inYonkersthat will attract new businesses, new jobs and new opportunity for all our residents.”

Murtagh issued a statement supporting Inspector General Dan Schorr’s audit of the Yonkers Federation of Teachers’ Welfare Fund and Calvi issued a letter on eliminating patronage.

Cavli also has the Independence Party line for mayor. The Conservative Party and Working Families Parties have yet to endorse a mayoral candidate.

3rd City Council candidate Mike Rotanelli

City Council, 1st District:

472 Valid Signatures Required

Five democrats and one republican filed petitions for City Council in the First District. They are:

Democrat Mark Hynes filed an impressive 1,100 signatures — 550 of which were collected solely by his father. Hynes narrowly lost a Democratic mini-convention for the nomination to Christopher Johnson.

Johnson matched Hynes with an equally impressive 1,100 signatures of his own. “We tried to make sure there was real support out there,” said Johnson.

Ivy Reeves, Lawrence Sykes and Derryl Beasley rounded out the field.

Republican Brian Carter filed his petitions for his uphill battle in this overwhelmingly Democratic district.

City Council, 3rd District:

412 Valid Signatures Required

This one gets complicated. Three democrats have filed petitions.

Former Councilman Dennis Robertson was the Democratic party’s nominee and was on the party’s petitions. Robertson, who quit the race last month but is now back submitted 525 signatures.

Democrat Mike Rotanelli topped all contenders in the Third District with an impressive 1,150 signatures. “Although it was a lot of hard work and many hot days,” said Rotanelli, “it was great meeting so many wonderful people. The experience has been completely motivating. I am looking forward to campaigning in the streets continuing to go door to door meeting people and getting to know the issues which are most important to them.”

Democrat Michael Sabatino submitted 635 signatures. Democrat Lamont Badru has withdrawn.

There were also three republicans who filed in the Third District; John Bryant — a democrat who received the GOP nomination —, Michael Sweeney and Michael Myer, all submitted petitions. Their numbers are unknown.

City Council, 5th District:

432 Valid Signatures Required

Democrat Kathleen Thomas submitted 700 signatures, while Democrat Katherine Brezler submitted approximately 500.

Brezler, who collected each and every signature on her petition herself, said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We need to get our residents back to work on our roads and buildings; preventative maintenance will save our city from crisis care, which is more costly.

“Our children are our most valuable resource,” Brezler continued. “Our school budget has perceptual budget gaps which forces us to cut building improvement projects, teachers and other vital staff. For too long, the people have been divorced from the process. We need to do what’s right for our future. It’s what’s best for our fiscal house, our safety and our families.”

Three Republicans — Mike Breen, Joe Crotty and Stephen Cerrato — submitted petitions in the Fifth District.

Editor’s Note: In this week’s issue of Yonkers Rising, we incorrectly spelled the first name of Katherine Brezler in the story above.

  6. Don’t believe Truman, he’s as bad as Edelman. If Truman has his way every West pol will be locked up.

  7. Hey Murphy any updates on the DiPietro case? I thought he was going to be freed thanks to your columns! Ha!

  8. Hats off to Dan Murphy for the excellent tallying, and gathering of comments from potential candidates for city office in Yonkers.

Frankly, it’s disappointing that not one of the candidates had backbone enough to take on the issue of Yonkers Police Brutality; that hardcore basket of perhaps 25 or so rogue cops out of more than 600, who believe that it’s okay to beat up men women and children, and who liked it better when they were the only police department in the region whose uniformed officers did not wear nametags, and the FBI threw softballs at Amicone and Hartnett.

Citizens and taxpayers who were offended by the sight of Irma Marquez being body-slammed and nearly killed by the likes of Officer Wayne Simoes, not to mention the Feds’ half-hearted, and intentionally flawed attempt to prosecute him, in the presence of some 30 or so Yonkers cops cheering him on for his “valor” must remember that Murtagh, and Lesnick, and Martinelli, not to mention Robertson, and yes, Assemblyman Mike Spano never once opened their mouths or attempted to do anything about the pervasive violence within the department which continued daily on their watch with the blessings and encouragement of Amicone and Hartnett.

Essentially those who have had a turn in Yonkers government at any level, and have not had courage enough to stand up on their hind legs, aren’t “worth the powder to blow to Hell.” In this regard Dennis Robertson, who ran for Mayor not that long ago, but lacked the guts to walk into whole districts of the City to campaign, deserves special mention for his cowardice and detachment.

  9. In response to Poster #6, and as a postscript to the above, it’s very likely that most of the “politicos” in Westchester, self-serving as they have been, should be locked up, if not for ELECTION FRAUD, perhaps for using their offices as a “Piggy Bank” for themselves and their buddies. That having been said I draw a clear line between those imposters and the few true public servants who go on doing their jobs every day here in Westchester. Unfortunately, when you look deeply into the matter, youj discover that those in elective positions who are truly so disposed can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

  10. Is it true that the people around Murtagh, especially GOP leaders are telling him that he can’t win?

    Comment by rumor | July 22, 2011

  11. to rumor-yes Murtagh has been urged to get out for some time, and to run for county board, by the Martinelli faction, which is alligned to the Mike Spano faction. Murtagh can still win a GOP primary in September, and if he does, then the pressure is on Martinelli to get out.

    Comment by Hal | July 22, 2011

  12. to Truman–who are you supporting for Mayor in Yonkers–Chuck Lesnick?

    Comment by Hal | July 22, 2011

  13. Not on your life! I haven’t heard a name yet worth considering based on record of past performance.

    Comment by A. Truman | July 22, 2011

  14. Murtagh was conveniently urged to get out by his “buddy” Castroblanco … who was supposed to be negotiating with Foxy to get Murtagh the Conservative line … and ended up arranging that people suggested Murtagh get out so Castroblanco could replace him as a consensus candidate. Another reason Castroblanco is the sleaziest pol in the city on the hill, which is really saying something.

  15. While chuck did put in a little over 3k signatures, On;y 1,396 were good. this means that over 1,900 signatures were bad. he only needed 1k to be on ballot so he did get that but came very close to being knocked off.

    Comment by Adam | July 24, 2011

  16. Castro-Blanco has been supporting Murtagh from the beginning and has never changed. He said bluntly to the many people who urged him to run that he gave his word and would not go back on it. Fox and several others tried their best to convince him to go against Murtagh but he refused. Whoever Anonymous is (a cowardly name) is, he should be ashamed of himself. Few peeople have the character of CB who refused to play the backstab game. Bravo to CB and shame on the rumor mongers!

Comment by Truth Teller | July 26, 2011

  17. Castro-Blanco doesn’t have a loyal bone in his body. He’s an opportunist, always looking for the next way to move up the political ladder, whether it’s at a friend’s expense or not. He no doubt created this scenario with Astorino and Fox, convincing them that he would be the best candidate for Mayor. What a sleaze.

    Comment by Anonymous | July 27, 2011

  18. Casrto Blanco proved that he’s a total whore when he took a job in the county attorney’s office. When was the last time that department acted as legal counsel. Westchester spends about $400,00/month outsourcing legal work. Castro-Blaco plays the same role as Hugo Fox. In the high paid Patsy Dept. aka Robbie’s house bitches.

Comment by fooled once.... | July 27, 2011

  19. Wait … someone used the words “character” and “Castro-Blanco” in the same sentence.

    Comment by Anonymous | July 28, 2011

  20. You people who are accusing CB of orchestrating this are completely wrong. CB told everyone from the beginning that he was with Murtagh and would not budge. All rumors to the contrary are false. If anyone can stand IN PUBLIC and say anything else I would be interested to hear it. Cowards and rumor mongers! Jealous that CB is a man who actually stays the course. to “Fooled Once” you clearly do not know CB or you would never say such loathsome things!

  21. The above comment courtesy of Mrs. Castro-Blanco.

  22. I heard that Martinelli is considering dropping out due to lack of support and belief from surrounding people that he can actually win. True?

    Comment by True? | July 28, 2011

  23. Martinelli doesn’t exactly light anyone’s fire, that’s for sure. Once the campaign heats up, he’ll be lost in the pack. Nice guy, but no presence.

A terrible political candidate (as witnessed by his loss to Chuck Lesnick a few years back)with a name that screams of old politics. The past.

Many Yonkers voters, republicans in particular, want to move on. I don’t think it’s anything personal against Richard Martinelli. That’s just the present day reality.

    Comment by Anonymous | July 28, 2011

  24. I’ve heard some people say that Martinelli is a long-time pot head. Any truth to that?

    Comment by Anonymous | July 28, 2011

  25. This week Martinelli sent out a letter with a raffle for a box at a Yankees game. Cost of the ticket is $1,000 each. Running a raffle may be illegal unless you have the proper license as he certainly is not a charity. It also begs the question is he that desperate for money that he has to charge a grand for a ticket? And that stupid to blanket mail everyone with that kind of plea?

The letter also used the Yankees logo. Did the Yankees give him permission?

A smart well-run campaign knows who its wealthy donors are and targets them directly. I guess Ritchie does not have any.

This calls into question if this is the person, who is possibly running an illegal gambling operation, is fit to be the next Mayor of Yonkers.

    It certainly is not “Conservative.”

This is something for the State to investigate and make a determination.
