Some Opposition Among Yonkers Dems in Anointing Mike Spano Next Mayor

While there has been a major push in recent months to lay the groundwork for a Mike Spano for mayor run in 2011, some rumblings and quiet opposition can be heard among Yonkers Democrats.
Some Yonkers Dems, like many Dems throughout Westchester County, were shocked and surprised that County Executive Andy Spano received and accepted the Conservative Party line. These Democrats do not believe that Dems should be taking the Conservative line based on the Conservative social beliefs on abortion and gay marriage.
Most importantly, the several Yonkers Dems we spoke to said that they saw Andy’s conservative endorsement as a deal brokered between the Spanos — with Andy getting the Conservative line and Mike, with the help of brother Nick, getting Andy’s support for Yonkers mayor in two years.
“I don’t want the Democratic endorsement for mayor in two years to be based on some political deal made for the Conservative Party. It stinks,” said one prominent Yonkers Dem.
The two biggest and most probable Yonkers Democrats standing in Mike’s way are Council President Chuck Lesnick and County Legislator and Yonkers GOP Chair Ken Jenkins. Both Lesnick and Jenkins have re-elections this year, with Jenkins expected to win easy. More on the Lesnick race in next post

With the legislative disaster in Albany, and with Mike Spano’s well-known lack of — shall we say “smarts” — it is unbelievable to think that anyone would seriously consider Mike Spano for mayor.
And for those hollering about patronage and other problems in Yonkers — is it realistic to think the Spano clan will be any good if they control Yonkers City Hall?
The Spanos always stand for themselves and for their own power and betterment and patronage. The record is clear on that. The residents of Yonkers wouldn’t matter at all to them. The clubhouse Spanos are “throwbacks” who should be thrown back once and for all.
Lesnick is looking to parlay a victory in November and take the Mayor’s seat. Lesnick vs Mike willbe like watching paint dry. Neither one has had an original idea in their lives. New blood please!
while i am reluctant about the spanos in city hall, they will get the job done, nick will make sure.
congrats mike.
hey captain america. your crude and nasty comments about mike are inappropriate. he works hard in albany and would do an excellent job for us in yonkers. the last time i checked mike had the support of over 70 percent of the voters in the last election. i guess the people are not ready to make the spanos “throughbacks”. i ussually dont respond to you but i just had to today
Dear Niceandeasy — My comments are based on fact and on the past record. Mike Spano would be a terrible and unqualified mayor.
But if you’re going to defend him, learn how to spell “throwback.” The way you spell it may be the same way Mike Spano would spell it.
I agree 100% with Captain America.
Mike Spano is plain dumb, not smart enough to make executive decisions. His only plan is that of Daddy Lenny and Bro Nick which is to get their slimy hands on the City budget.
Too Dumb – period.
Have any of you people actually spoke to Mike, because if you have spoken to him you would realize that he’s very intelligent. But don’t blame Mike for getting into office, blame the people who curse-the Spano name, but they do nothing to vote them out. And blame the people who talk negatively about the Spano’s, but yet they accept their patronage.
There’s a lot of people in this city who condemn what the Spano family has done, but yet they do nothing about it, so maybe it’s not entirely the Spano family’s fault.
I have spoken with Mike and he has the IQ of milk. He is an agreeable pawn of his daddy and big brother. Unqualified is a nice way of saying it
Who else could possibly run for Mayor? Liam?
How about Captain America run since all he does is run his mouth on this board on every article
captain america just wants to preserve his job at city hall.
mike spano is not dumb..he may not be an engineer or
a scientist but his instincts are good..mike has to surround
himself with capable people as department heads and he can
then get the information he needs to make a good decision.
zeleski was very bright..and that helped the city how?
spencer was bright as well, see any development in yonkers?
John Flynn was not a genius but he got things done back in
the day…being mayor is not so much a function of brain power as it is in common sense, good political skills and
good judgment…mike will do just fine
Anon Edelman continues to back the Spanos. His blind support for that patronage mill of hacks is getting boring.
Yonkers needs some change for the better. But the Spanos, as proved by their history and pattern, represent change for the worse. Their days should be over.
Yonkers will never improve under the Spanos. How stupid does Edelman think people really are?
Not stupid enough to buy his Spano b.s.
Its an objective view of mike’s performance..however
if you want change i suggest you convince the republicans
to think outside the box when they run a mayoral candidate..
Mike has dont an excellent job representing Yonkers in NY State, and can’t wait to see him become the nexy Mayor of Yonkers. Keep up the good work Mike!
Here we go again, George Bush lite.Mike Spano is not a bad man,nor is he an uncaring politician, but the times call for someone with more gravitas, someone with the strength of conviction and leadership to get things done in Yonkers.
rumor is that mike will indeed have a republican opponent
his name…JOHN SPENCER
