Some Dems Refusing to Carry Andy Spano Petitions: Idoni vs. Morabito Double Dip?
Here’s the latest election / petition news we have been hearing:
Some Democrats in lower Westchester, are refusing and/or complaining about carrying petitions for County Executive Andy Spano. We hear that a few Dems carrying for Spano were critiqued by homeowners and property owners about sky-high property taxes, focusing their blame on Andy.
Now while these few Dems will have no impact on Spano’s petition drive, which will put him way over the top of signatures needed, its worthy of a post for two reasons.
1) Andy’s campaign runs a tight ship and they do not appreciate any signs of disloyalty to the big Westchester Dem — Andy — and they are not happy with the defections, howevery few they are.
2) It highlights the growing discontent among Westchester taxpayers feel about their government, and the cost to them and their families.
Idoni/Morabito Double Dip?
Westchester County Clerk Tim Idoni will face a challenge from former Rye Supervisor Robert Morabito in November. Morabito, a Democrat, got the Republican line to challenge Idoni from County GOP Chairman Doug Colety. Colety has been criticized of late on this blog for not helping deliver the Independence Party line for a lot of his Republican candidates across the county.
Giving the GOP line to a Dem Morabito, is another Colety choice that we hear rumblings about from our Republican friends, who wonder why Colety gave the line for a countywide office to a Dem. Wasn’t there any Republican in the county willing to run for county clerk?
Morabito is now attempting to get on the Democratic line for county clerk, which would result in a Democratic Primary between Idoni and Morabito.
Here’s where it gets interesting:
Morabito is circulating a petition, that has his name on it for county clerk, but also Tony Castro’s name for district attorney.
Castro is challenging DA Janet DiFiore; both Castro and DiFiore are Dems and are headed to a Democratic Primary in September, with the winner facing Republican Dan Schorr in November.
Castro has the support of the Independence Party and its county chairman, Dr. Giulio Cavallo. Cavallo has been twisting the arms of Democrats who he gave his Ind line to to collect Dem signatures for Tony Casto. Cavallo has jumped into bed with Sam Zherka, Guardian publisher and admitted target of a Manhattan DA criminal probe.
So a partnership between Castro and Morabito is upon us, with Cavallo and Zherka pushing behind the scenes.
We hear that both Castro and Morabito will have enough signatures to get on the ballot, which would give us two Democratic countywide primaries in September — DiFiore vs. Castro and Idoni vs. Morabito.

Morabito is not a popular figure particularly in the
sound shore area…for castro to hook up with him
is more a sign of castro’s inability to get signatures
from democrats than anything else…this election
will seal the fate of both zherka and cavalo as influences
in the westchester political scene..the deals made by
them will come to absolutely nothing electorally
and they will be marginalized…castro will lose big
time to difiore in the primary as will morabito to
iodoni..the blame will go party to the zherka/cavalo
alliance but also to the republican chairman when they
see how close astorino comes to spano even without
the conservative party line…the only one that will
emerge as a power in westchester politics is the
conservative party
Colety is at best a bad leader. Who knows what he might be at worst? That guy should be shown the door by the Republican party.
I just love how supposedly independent blogs are so quick to print failed PR man/party hack Mike Edelman’s spin on local politics as if it were reporting. Edelman’s attempts to somehow suggest that Democrat Tony Castro has shadowy associations didn’t work in 2005 when he first ran against Republican Janet DiFiore, and it’s not going to work now.
Democratic primary voters are a savvy group. They saw the Republicans attempt to tie Barack Obama to every one with whom he ever had so much as a conversation. We know how well that worked. Tony Castro has a reputation as a clean, uncompromised people’s district attorney from 14 years in the Bronx DA’s office. Can DiFiore say the same from her years of toiling in the Republican trenches?
When you spin it as Cavallo and Zherka pushing behind the scenes you should in all fairness investigate just who is pushing behind the scenes for recent Republican DiFiore. But that would require real reporting. Is it easier to just print what Mike Edelman sends you?
One question regarding Edelman – If he’s such a talented spinmeister, why isn’t he working? Why’s he got so much time to spend all day on these blogs? Who’s paying his rent? Just asking.
——————————————————————————–
you really need to stop questioning why edelman does
what he does..maybe he is a multimillionaire with time
on his hands..maybe he has physical problems which limit
his ability to go out.but you clearly are worried that
he is dissing tony castro..and you should be ..sam
zherka sued edelman for no reason…alleging he
conpired to pursuade and cajole the manhattan da into
investigating zherka for drug dealing and prostitution
maybe edelman can’t be intimidated..maybe castro’s
affiliation with zherka is unholy..what candidate for
da that you have ever heard of hangs around with a strip
club owner under criminal investigation in new york city
why don’t you address that issue…before you attempt to
criticize edelman…cavalo is the leader of the IND party
but just a short time ago zherka accused him of being corrupt ..did that change..and if it did why did it change
castro flunked the bar 5 times..thats a fact..he allowed
a murderer to go free on his watch..thats a fact..he
takes money from a strip club owner,,thats a fact…his
campaign guru is the editor of the guardian who gets paid
by the strip club owner thats a fact…castro lost twice
as the democratic nominee when he should have won easily
first against pirro then against difiore when he had
a 100,000 vote registration margin…his reputation in
the bronx was mediocre..ask his boss…he was only a
deputy bureau chief..difiore was an ada in westchester
she was elected to the supreme court and served with
distinction..and castro can barely speak….how dare
you ask who is paying edelman’s rent…edelman can pay
his rent your rent and your bosses rent..
Colety has sold the Westchester Republican Party to Guilio Cavallo and Sam Zherka. Colety needs Cavallo and Zherka’s OK to endorse any candidate. Republicans should get rid of this hack.
coltey has no choice but to be a servant to cavallo. and thats really sad
colety does have a choice..he can choose to do the right
thing for the right reason…but colety is more interested
in getting printing for himself than attempting to rebuild
the party ..colety should be declining the printing and
making no deals with cavalo…but he is not strategic enough
to recognize what he has to do…so he has totally compromised the party and has empowered cavalo…schorr got
screwed…and in the end so did astorino with the conservatives…rising times should get the filings of
all the independent party nomineess to see where they
do there printing…it should also get castro’s
to see where he gets his printing done…it will be
an eye opener..and every member of the executive committee
of the republican party should be supplied with the results
